A residential garden design project to landscape and remodel the surrounding land after the extensive redevelopment of a rural home

A rural property

Blue Hills is a private residence in the village of Coffinswell in Devon which had recently undergone extensive architectural rebuilding. As a result of the construction, the existing garden and grounds had been demolished, leaving the surrounding land in need of landscaping and remodelling.

Approached by the property owner, we were commissioned to undertake a comprehensive landscape design to create a new large, private garden for this rural home.

From design to feature spaces

Looking over the site prior to the design stages, it was clear a key consideration was its sloping nature and exposed position. Of particular concern was the tipping and disturbance of the ground which meant large parts of the site were stripped of topsoil. The only existing feature of value on the site was a small group of mature trees. This meant we had a blank canvas with which to work.

Our design concepts for the site featured a series of spaces created around a central eclipse lawn. Using soft landscaping, we were able to work with the sloping nature to provide a natural look and feel to the site. The hard landscaping elements helped us create a mix of seating areas, terraces, gravel and grass pathways, decorative pergolas, and shallow steps.

Levelling of certain areas also allowed us to create the central lawn as well as incorporating a helipad. The existing tree group on the eastern side of the site has been used as the setting for a new Rhododendron Dell with woodland glade. The slope beyond the retaining Gabion wall was also smoothed to create a natural grass bank linking to the field beyond.

A full-service project

Our services comprised a full design package, from concept through to detailed construction drawings and specifications for the hard and soft works. We also undertook the process of finding the right contractors, as well as contract administration throughout the course of the project.

With the completion of the project in 2017, the owners of Blue Hills now have a beautifully landscaped, yet practical, garden with plenty of interest and feature spaces.
